چکیده
This paper is concerned with a new type of deployable structures that can be rolled up like a tape measure but, unlike a tape measure, are stable in two different configurations. The key to the behaviour of these structures is a particular type of composite construction based on an anti-symmetric lay-up of glass fibres in a polypropylene matrix. The paper presents a finite element analysis using the ABAQUS package of the process of rolling up a bi-stable cylindrical shell. The results of this simulation provide considerable new insights into the structural mechanics of bi-stable shells, as well as predicting the stress distribution, curvature variation, etc. in the rolledup shell.

On Bending Response of Doubly Curved Laminated Composite Shells Using Hybrid Refined Models
This paper presents a static analysis of laminated composite doubly-curved shells using refined kinematic models with polynomial and non-polynomial functions recently introduced in the literature. To be specific, Maclaurin, trigonometric, exponential and zig-zag functions are employed. The employed refined models are based on the equivalent single layer theories. A simply supported shell is sub...

Having two stable configurations and no need to any permanent energy sources for remaining in each of these stable states, bi-stable composite plates have gained many applications. This paper has concentrated on control and dynamic response of cross ply bi-stable composite plates (0.90). To do this, using Hamilton principle , Rayleigh-Ritz method, and a MATLAB programme specifically designed fo...

The N distinct prime numbers that make up a composite number M allow 2 N −1 bi partioning into two relatively prime factors. Each such pair defines a pair of conjugate representations. These pairs of conjugate representations, each of which spans the M dimensional space are the familiar complete sets of Zak transforms (J. Zak, Phys. Rev. Let.19, 1385 (1967)) which are the most natural represent...
متن کاملDiscrepancies Between Free Vibration of FML and Composite Cylindrical Shells Reinforced by CNTs
In this study, discrepancies between the free vibration of fiber-metal laminate (FML) and composite cylindrical shells reinforced by carbon nanotubes (CNTs) based on Love’s first approximation shell theory have been considered by beam modal function model. The representative volume elements consist of three and four phases for composite and FML structures, respectively, which include fiber, CNT...
متن کاملOn the Geometrically Nonlinear Analysis of Composite Axisymmetric Shells
Composite axisymmetric shells have numerous applications; many researchers have taken advantage of the general shell element or the semi-analytical formulation to analyze these structures. The present study is devoted to the nonlinear analysis of composite axisymmetric shells by using a 1D three nodded axisymmetric shell element. Both low and higher-order shear deformations are included in the ...
